The Journey to Show Day
For an audience, a live performance begins the moment the lights dim and the music starts. But for a production like Poldark’s ‘Mind Mysteries’, the journey starts months before anyone takes their seat. Every performance is the result of countless hours of planning, creativity, coordination and preparation, all carefully designed to create an unforgettable experience for the audience member watching or the volunteer taking part.
The Team Behind the Show
While audiences experience a polished evening of mystery and entertainment, an enormous amount of work is happening behind the scenes to keep the production moving.
A large part of the show’s success relies on myself managing the operational logistics from one venue to another. Coordinating schedules, securing venues and ensuring their requirements balance with our technical requirements and crucially, the communication between all parties is essential to ensuring every performance runs smoothly.
Alongside the operational side is the visual world created by my colleague Jack, the show’s marketing and design lead. From the striking show posters to the atmosphere of the stage itself, every visual element is carefully crafted to reflect the mysterious and subconscious themes of Mind Mysteries.
The goal is to create a consistent and recognisable identity that bridges the gap between the online experience and the live theatre environment. Together, we as a team, build the professional infrastructure that allows Poldark and the Mind Mysteries performance to fully come alive.
This ‘behind the scenes’ structure allows Poldark to focus entirely on the psychological and performance aspects of the show.
Building the Experience
Long before the stage is set, the foundations of the show are already taking shape. Creating a performance of this scale is a creative marathon that blends psychology, storytelling, comedy, music and theatrical precision.
During these early stages, Poldark works not only as a performer, but as a director and strategist, carefully crafting every moment of the show. Routines are refined, comedic beats are scripted and new concepts are rigorously tested to ensure the show flows naturally from light-hearted curiosity into deep, spellbinding mystery.
Every reveal, pause and suggestion is meticulously timed to maximise both the volunteer’s and the audience’s imagination and emotional response. The pacing of the show becomes just as important as the content itself, ensuring the experience feels seamless from beginning to end.
Building Anticipation Before Tickets Go Live
In today’s entertainment world, visibility is everything. Long before show day arrives, a significant amount of work goes into building excitement around the show and connecting with potential audiences online.
There is a balance involved in promoting the hypnosis and mind mystery experience branded ‘Mind Mysteries LIVE’. The marketing has to be bold enough to stand out in a crowded marketplace, while still maintaining an air of mystery that protects the secrets of the show itself.
This phase is all about building trust and curiosity. Audiences aren’t simply buying a ticket; they are stepping into a shared experience unlike anything else. It’s more than a show, it’s an experience.
Through engaging video content, past show reviews, social media campaigns and interactive posts, the aim is for the anticipation to grow. Every post, reel and announcement is timed to maintain momentum throughout the booking period and to keep the show at the forefront of people’s minds.
Beyond the digital landscape of which we are familiar with today, promotion also involves traditional outreach. Posters are designed and distributed, local press are contacted and venues work alongside the team to reach audiences through their own mailing lists and networks. Every piece of promotion contributes to building the atmosphere long before the curtain rises.
Refining Every Detail
As the performance date approaches, the preparation becomes even more focused behind the scenes.
One of the most important elements during this period is the refinement of the musical score and technical production. As we mentioned in a previous blog, (why-music-is-essential-in-a-stage-hypnosis-show), music plays a huge role in guiding emotion, energy and focus throughout the show. Poldark spends hours reviewing tracks, sound effects and transitions, he searches for the exact rhythms and tones that can heighten suspense, support trance sequences or punctuate moments of comedy. Every cue is selected with purpose.
At the same time, mental rehearsal becomes increasingly important. Long before stepping onto the stage, the show has already been performed hundreds of times in the mind of Poldark.
Different volunteer reactions, audience energies and unexpected scenarios are visualised repeatedly to prepare for what could be, every possible situation. This ‘dry-run’ preparation ensures he can adapt naturally and confidently to whatever may unfold live on his stage.
The Day of the Show: Quiet Intensity
Show day itself often begins quietly, but beneath the surface there is intense focus and concentration.
Before the audience arrives, the stage must be transformed into a carefully controlled environment through putting into practice the risk assessment to ensure full safety of not only Poldark and his volunteers, but of the audience, back stage and venue teams.
Technical rehearsals and soundchecks become the backbone of the entire experience. Lighting cues are tested, transitions are refined and music levels are adjusted to ensure every sensory element works together seamlessly. Music and atmosphere, lighting and sound are not simply background elements, they are essential tools that help guide focus, emotion and immersion throughout the performance.
By the time the doors open, every technical detail has been carefully prepared so Poldark understands exactly how the room will respond to each moment. However, technical preparation is only one part of the process.
Mentally, Poldark enters a heightened state of awareness before every show, preparing to read body language, subtle behavioural cues and the unique energy of each audience from the moment guests begin arriving.
His final moments before stepping into the spotlight are often spent in focused solitude, away from the noise of the venue, away from the audience, away from the back stage preparation. This is the moment to centre energy, sharpen focus and fully step into the role of the Hypnosis Showman.
After the Final Applause
Even when the curtain falls, the experience is not truly over.
Some of the most meaningful moments happen after the performance during post-show meet and greets. This is where the barrier between Poldark and audience disappears, allowing genuine conversations and personal connections to take place.
For many audience members, this is something special; an opportunity to share their experiences, ask questions and reflect on what they have just witnessed together. For Poldark, this is also something special; to take time to speak with volunteers and audience members alike, to advise and guide and to receive their feedback which helps to shape future performances.
It’s More Than a Show, it’s an Experience
Ultimately, Mind Mysteries is far more than a show, it’s an experience. It is the result of months of collaboration, preparation, creativity and dedication from an entire team working toward one shared goal: creating an unforgettable human experience.
From the first spark of an idea to the final handshake at the stage door, every detail is designed with the audience in mind.
