World Theatre Day, March 27
On World Theatre Day, March 27, I take a moment to celebrate the technicians who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring stories to life on stage. From lighting and sound to set design and stage management, technical theatre professionals create the atmosphere, precision and seamless transitions that audiences often never see but always experience. Their skill, creativity and dedication are essential to the magic of theatre, turning scripts and performances into the immersive productions we love.
The Hidden Stars of the Poldark Show
When people attend the Poldark Show, they often remember the laughter, the volunteers on stage and the moments where the impossible seems to happen right before their eyes. What many people don’t see, however, are the crucial elements behind the scenes that make those moments possible: sound, lighting and technical support.
As a stage hypnotist, I rely on these elements just as much as the routines themselves. Without them, even the most entertaining hypnosis performance can struggle to connect with an audience.
Creating the Right Atmosphere
Hypnosis is not just about suggestion, it’s about atmosphere.
Lighting plays a huge role in setting the tone for the show. Soft, focused lighting helps draw attention to the stage and creates a sense of anticipation before the show even begins. For example, some of new scenes in my Mind Mysteries show, has allowed the team to create new lighting scenes, which enhances the atmospheric performance.

When volunteers are on stage, proper lighting ensures the audience can clearly see their reactions, expressions and the fun unfolding.
Good lighting also helps guide the audience’s focus. Whether highlighting a participant in the middle of a routine or creating dramatic pauses, lighting supports the flow and pace of the performance.
The Voice of the Show
Clear sound is absolutely essential in a hypnosis show. The entire performance revolves around communication: instructions, suggestions and comedic timing, all depend on the audience hearing every word clearly.
A reliable microphone, properly balanced speakers and an experienced sound technician ensure that the audience never misses a moment.
Whether I’m speaking softly during the relaxation induction or delivering a punchline to a packed theatre, good sound makes sure the message reaches every corner of the room.
Sound also affects the volunteers on stage. They must be able to hear instructions clearly and comfortably. If sound levels are inconsistent or distorted, it can interrupt the flow of the hypnosis and break the immersive experience.
Music and Timing
Music is another powerful tool in my show. Carefully chosen background music enhances relaxation during inductions, builds excitement during routines and creates emotional shifts throughout the show.
But timing is everything. This is where technical support becomes invaluable. A skilled technician ensures music cues start and stop at the perfect moment, keeping the show moving smoothly and maintaining the energy in the room.
The Role of Technical Support
Behind every great show is a team that keeps everything running seamlessly. Technical support ensures microphones work properly, lighting cues happen at the right time and any unexpected issues are handled quickly minimising any disruption the audience may experience.
While the audience sees me on stage, there’s often a skilled technician working quietly behind the scenes making sure everything works exactly as it should for the Poldark Show.

When Everything Comes Together
When sound, lighting and technical support work together, they create an environment where the magic of hypnosis can truly shine. The audience becomes more engaged, volunteers feel more comfortable and the entire show flows naturally from start to finish.
It’s easy to focus on what happens on stage, but the real secret of a successful hypnosis show often lies behind the curtain.
So the next time you attend a live hypnosis performance, remember, the stars of the show aren’t just the volunteers. The sound engineer, lighting technician and entire technical team are just as essential in creating the unforgettable experience you see on stage, they are the hidden stars of the show.
