Why are Theatre Curtains and Seats Almost Always Red?

Speaking of those traditional theatres, rather than the modern art houses. Walk into almost any traditional theatre and chances are, you’ll notice a familiar sight: rich red curtains framing the stage and rows of deep red seating stretching into the darkness.
It’s such a consistent design choice that it feels almost inevitable. However, it is actually the result of centuries of practical decisions, cultural symbolism and a bit of visual science too.Let me explain more about how red became the colour of the traditional theatre.

It’s a Clever Trick of Light

Long before modern lighting systems which we have now, theatres would have relied on candles and gas lamps. These would have produced a dim, warm light that didn’t illuminate spaces evenly. Under those conditions, red fabric appears much darker than brighter colours such as blue or green would have have been.

What this meant is that red curtains and seats would fade into the background when the stage was lit up, helping the audience to focus their attention where it really mattered most; that being the stage and the performers on the stage.

Red wasn’t just decorative, it was really functional. It helped create a contrast between the performance and everything around it.

The Colour of Prestige and Occasion

Poldark has created a new scene for Mind Mysteries which has a great emphasis on colour and the meaning behind the colours. Whether this scene came from our conversation about the use of red in traditional theatres, or not, maybe subconsciously it did.

Red has long been associated with wealth, power and importance. In years gone by, red dyes were expensive to produce and fabrics like velvet were considered extremely luxurious. By using deep red materials, theatres came the impression that attending a performance was a special, prestigious even.
This sense of grandeur became part of the identity of the theatre. The colour helped elevate the atmosphere, turning a night out into something ceremonial and memorable. It became more than a show, it became an experience.

Setting the Emotional Tone

There’s also a psychological dimension. Red is also a warm, stimulating colour that can subtly increase feelings of excitement and anticipation. It energises a space without being overwhelming, especially when used in darker shades.

Of course in a theatre setting, this works perfectly. Before the show begins, the red surroundings contribute to a sense of expectation, of excitement and anticipation of what is to come. As the lights dim, that same red recedes into near darkness, allowing the performance to take full control of the audience’s attention. Exactly what a performer, like Poldark, desires for their show.

Practical Benefits Behind the Scenes

Beyond aesthetics and psychology, red is also really quite practical. Dark red fabrics are excellent at hiding stains, scuffs and signs of wear, which is an important feature in venues that host large crowds night after night. They also age gracefully. While lighter colours can fade or discolour noticeably over time, deep reds tend to maintain their richness, making them a cost-effective long-term choice.

The Power of Tradition

Once red became standard in Europe’s most influential theatres, the look spread quickly. New venues adopted the same design to emulate the elegance and success of established performance spaces. Over time, it has become less of a choice and more of a convention. Even today, modern theatres that experiment with design often still incorporate red in some form, simply because it feels right to audiences.

More Than Just a Colour

So bear in mind that the next time you take your seat in a theatre, that sea of red isn’t just a stylistic flourish. It’s a carefully evolved tradition, one that blends science, symbolism and practicality to enhance the entire experience.

It’s a reminder that even the smallest details in a theatre are designed with purpose, all in service of the same goal: drawing you into the story which is about to unfold on stage.
